An audience with Honor

Honor Blackman

We ask Honor Blackman for the secret to her youthful vitality and Professor Adam Carey takes a look at her NutriProfile results to reveal the nutritional reasons that have helped her to fight back the years.

You look fabulous for your age, how do you stay looking so young and brimming with vitality?
I’m very lucky because I’ve inherited great genes, my mother looked amazing when she was in her 80s. I’m also very happy and have a wonderful family; I have four very dear grandchildren who keep me extremely active and feeling young.

How do you keep healthy?
I do 10 minutes on my exercise bike every day without fail. I also do back and stomach exercises every day and I’m a huge fan of Pilates which keeps me supple and active. I take glucosamine to help with my joints as well as taking a multi-vitamin. I’ve got quite a strong immune system, so I normally fight off any colds and coughs quite quickly. I keep thinking I should take a dose of echinacea before going to see my grandchildren though to give my immune system that extra boost as you know children, they usually have runny noses!

When were you healthiest?
During the Avengers. I worked like a dog and did all my own fight scenes – I was always throwing men over my shoulder!

Is your diet important to you, are you conscious of what you eat and drink?
It is now yes. Up to 15 years ago I didn’t really have to think about what I ate, I was just very lucky to have an 18 inch waist when I was in the Avengers. Now I am much more conscious of my diet. I eat a lot of oily fish which is great for me, although I did find out from my NutriProfile report that I shouldn’t have more than four portions of fresh fish a week [as more may contain an unhealthy level of pollutants], which is really useful to know. I love broccoli and salads and don’t really crave breads or cakes, which is very fortunate for my waistline!

Have your results from your NutriProfile made you rethink your current eating habits or made you make any changes to your diet?
Yes absolutely, I found the helpful hints on the back page of my personalised report rather handy. I found it fascinating to read that you should only drink room temperature drinks with a meal as this helps aid digestion – I’m going to try this. What I think is superb about my utriProfile report is that I can refer to it on a daily basis for advice. I already took glucosamine for my joints but I now take it with chondroitin which attracts water into the joints to be a shock absorber and I am taking Ginkgo biloba for my memory. I’m also going to try and eat more liver and red meat and more marmite, which I love anyway, as it has a high yeast content.

What would be your advice to others who want to look as good as you?
People need to have a bit of self discipline and take charge of their own destinies. A lot of people know what they should and shouldn’t do, what is and isn’t good for them, my advice would be to try and stick to what you know you should!

And finally, what do you make of the new James Bond, Daniel Craig?
I think Daniel Craig is a great actor, but I arguably had the best James Bond when I worked alongside Sean Connery.

‘Reviewing Honor’s NutriProfile, it is no surprise that she looks as good today as she did when she was appearing in the ‘Avengers’. I have seen few profiles as good as Honor’s, she has a fantastic complexion, which I am sure is a consequence of eating enough oily fish. Honor trains every day, which will keep her toned and supple. However, her vitamin D intake was on the low side which could affect her bone health, but she intends to remedy this by consuming liver regularly. She is also at risk of having a low folate intake and has a low B5 level, so she’s going to start putting marmite back on her toast for breakfast. Honor said she wanted to support her memory and her bowel function, although her memory is actually very good and will have been greatly helped by her Omega-3 intake. But she might consider Ginkgo biloba to help improve mental function. Her fibre intake was on the low side, but could be improved with more fibrous vegetables and whole grains in her diet. A psyllium husk supplement would also work well.’
