Our vet’s experience

Our veterinary consultant, John Foster, explains how his dog Freya has suffered from distressing joint problems and how Flexi-Joints has helped maintain her enjoyment of life.

“I knew Freya was going to have problems with her hips from the time we got her as a pup. I could feel her hips were loose, which is a strong sign that the normal relationship of the upper thighbone to the pelvis is distorted.

Sadly as predicted, two years later she started with stiffness after exercise and at the first sign I started her on Flexi-Joints. Within three weeks the stiffness was less and she was coping with a 3-4 mile walk with enough energy afterwards to run around chasing real/imagined pigeons and squirrels. As if to prove that ‘Flexi’ was the reason I stopped giving the pills. To my dismay the stiffness signs returned very quickly.

Freya is a golden retriever, a breed that unfortunately has a high incidence of a hip distortion called hip dysplasia. Her hip looseness had progressed to arthritis, which is both painful and limits movement. All seemed settled until 18 months ago, at almost six she ‘overdid it’ and went very lame on her left side. X-rays confirmed arthritis of both hips, with the left being much worse.

I now know what it’s like to be the owner of a dog going for major surgery, it’s a very worrying time. Her orthopaedic surgeon did an amazing job on her left hip so that within eight weeks she was a changed dog again and now at seven, she is still doing things she shouldn’t really do. I wouldn’t risk taking her off Flexi-Joints ever again!”
