It is said that men take better care of their cars
than their health! But as prostate problems affect well over 50% of
those over 40, there are a few things that every man should
know...
The condition of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is not
life-threatening, but can be troublesome as the prostate glad
becomes enlarged. This can cause an obstruction of the urethra,
leading to urinary frequency problems, urinary tract infections and
discomfort. Epidemiological studies show that there is a higher
incidence of problems in Western society and this evidence implies
that diet and/or lifestyle are an important risk factors.
So how can men help themselves? From a diet and lifestyle
perspective, you can take steps to prevent problems by ensuring
that you maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly and eat at
least five portions of fruit and vegetables (particularly
cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli) per day. You’ve no
doubt heard it all before, but remember that only you can help
yourself to reduce the risk of health problems in later life.
If you already have some symptoms of BPH, a regular GP visit and
check-up are necessary. You may find that your symptoms are eased
if you reduce caffeine and alcohol intake and take regular doses of
some supplements that have been shown to help.
Saw palmetto has been shown in studies to significantly ease the
symptoms of BPH. In one study, symptoms improved dramatically in
21% of men after two months and in 46% after six months. Lycopene,
a naturally occurring chemical found in tomatoes, has long been
recognised as one of the most ‘prostate healthy’
compounds available. Taking a daily supplement is a good idea for
most men over 40.
