Introducing a higher quality, new gold standard omega 3
that goes far beyond ordinary expectations.
The benefits associated with omega 3 essential fatty acids are
now widely understood and yet only 1/3rd of the UK eats oily fish
on a regular basis. Even then, the amount consumed does not reach
the government target of a minimum two portions a week. Ideally, we
should be getting at least 450mg omega 3 daily, but rising levels
of pollution and heavy metals found in our oceans have caused
concern over the safety of consuming fresh fish.
Fish oil supplements are one of the best ways to get your daily
allowance of omega 3 in a concentrated pure form. Not only are they
a more convenient way of achieving high levels of omega 3, but they
are purer and safer than fresh fish. However, not all fish oil
supplements are treated to the same high standard and some
companies are quickly advancing towards superior standards in
quality and safety.
Natural beginnings
Raw material for the highest quality omega 3 supplements is
sourced from clean, nutrient rich waters, where fish oil is high in
omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA and low in industrial pollutants.
Once sourced, the oil is processed in its natural, highly
bioavailable, triglyceride form rather than the cheaper form of
ethyl esters.
Unlike bad’ triglyceride in the blood, caused by saturated
fat, omega 3 triglycerides are unsaturated fats and may benefit
your health by helping to thin the blood and balance abnormal blood
fat levels.
Exceeding expectations
Many industrial pollutants are fat soluble and consequently end
up in fatty fish. Regular processing can remove these to an extent,
but by far the purest oils on the market use a patented double
distillation process that strips the oil further. This removes
environmental pollutants such as PCBs, dioxins and other industrial
contaminants, as well as saturated fat, to a level exceeding all
known global purity standards, to go beyond average requirements
and produce a premium fish oil (graph 1).
Maintaining quality
When standard fish oils are processed to reduce their levels of
pollutants, the oil can often come into contact with oxygen, which
reduces its quality and raises its chances of rancidity. Higher
quality oils prevent rancidity and impurity caused by the
by-products of oxidation, by stripping the raw oil of any oxidative
components and preventing any contact with oxygen throughout the
purification process. This also further ensures the stability and
bioavailability of the oil.
Healthspan Opti-Omega 3
The purest fish oil available in the UK, Healthspan’s
Opti-Omega 3 (see page opposite) is double-distilled, preserving
the naturally high concentrations of the omega 3 essential fatty
acids DHA and EPA.
