With its proven health benefits, if you take only one
supplement every day, then it really should be omega 3, says Dr
Rachel Fisher, nutrition expert.
Omega 3 fish oils play a key role in vital body processes. They
are a rich source of essential fatty acids - the two main types are
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic
acid (EPA). These are not produced by the body, so
omega 3 must be obtained from the diet (oily fish), pure fish oil
supplements or a combination of both.
Omega 3 essential fatty acids act in the cells of the
cardiovascular system where they work in a number of ways to
maintain a healthy heart and circulation. The omega 3
DHA molecule is integrated in all brain cell
membranes, where it exerts important functions related to
memory.
The UK Government now recommends taking at
least 450mg of omega 3 daily to help maintain a healthy heart.
However, many people don’t get anywhere near this amount
(despite the recommendation to eat at least one portion of oily
fish per week) and many others are put off by the relatively high
levels of toxins that have been found in fresh fish and so prefer
to take pure fish oil capsules to be sure that they’re
getting enough.
Healthspan’s omega 3 fish oil capsules provide high levels
of the beneficial essential fatty acids DHA and
EPA. They are also purified and distilled to
eliminate any concern about pollutants.
For vegetarians or those who prefer a non-fish source of omega
3, look for Healthspan’s ‘Cerebrum’ product,
which provides DHA from an algae sourcein
gelatin-free capsules, and Flaxseed Oil capsules, from which the
body synthesises omega 3 EPA.
