Glucosamine
products are some of the most popular nutritional supplements in
the UK. Numerous research studies testify to their popularity and
effectiveness. Most indicate that a mixture of Glucosamine and
Chondroitin are the most effective.
However, Chondroitin is a very expensive ingredient, costing
roughly four times as much, gram for gram, as Glucosamine, so many
people forsake this ingredient - on the grounds of cost - and buy
Glucosamine on its own. Healthspan produces a range of five
different Glucosamine products to ensure that our customers can
make a fully informed choice.
Which one is right for you?
Because Glucosamine products are fairly new, conclusive research on
optimum intake levels are not available. A well-known arthritis
specialist, Dr Jason Theodosakis, author of ‘The Arthritis
Cure’, recommends 1,500mg of Glucosamine Sulphate plus
1,200mg Chondroitin Sulphate per day as the optimum intake. Others
believe that less Chondroitin is sufficient.
At Healthspan we believe in giving our customers the widest
possible choice, so we offer the five different products shown on
the opposite page, with an explanation of the differences between
each product.
What is Glucosamine?
Glucosamine in its natural form exists in all of our joints and
muscles, playing a role in the everyday mobility and smooth working
of cartilage, tendons and ligaments. It is a major building block
of the complex proteins called glycosaminoglycans that in turn form
part of the structure of cartilage. Healthspan’s pure
pharmaceutical grade Glucosamine Sulphate mirrors this naturally
existing Glucosamine in your cartilage.
Purity is of particular importance for Glucosamine and
Chondroitin products because the quality of raw ingredients can
vary tremendously from supplier to supplier. In its natural pure
form, Glucosamine is a creamy white. So the colour of your tablets
are indicative of purity.
What is ‘Marine’ Chondroitin
Sulphate?
Chondroitin Sulphate is a substance that is also found naturally in
the cartilage ‘matrix’. It helps form a sponge-like
substance that acts as nature’s shock absorber. Please note
that Healthspan uses ‘Marine’ Chondroitin Sulphate
sourced exclusively from fish. Most other companies use Chondroitin
made from cattle or pigs. We believe that ours is therefore both
the safest and healthiest form available.
As we get older our bodies produce glucosamine less efficiently
and our joints can begin to suffer. This is why taking a supplement
is so important. Most of us start to take products like
Glucosamine, Chondroitin or MSM ‘after the horse has
bolted’ and we have started to experience the first aches and
pains of osteoarthritis.
At Healthspan, we recommend that everyone over the age of forty,
or who undertakes high impact sports such as running, should start
to take Glucosamine supplements to maintain joint health, rather
than waiting until damage starts to occur.
