Herbal extracts have been used traditionally in folk and medicinal practice for centuries and indeed, they form the basis of many modern medicines. In the case of herbal supplements, it is the active part of the plant (the part that plays an essential role in the plants metabolism) that is harvested or extracted and made into a pill or a capsule. When choosing a herbal supplement, always look out for standardised extracts which have a guaranteed level of the active ingredients.
