Probiotic Supplements

Probiotic, or 'friendly' bacteria, are present in the digestive system, mouth, vagina, urinary tract, lungs and on the skin. As a result, they have wide-ranging effects on our health, helping to keep the body in balance.

Dietary sources of probiotics are few, including sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, kefir and some forms of yoghurt, and sometimes have an acquired taste, but Healthspan offers a wide range of probiotic supplements, containing from five billion to 50 billion live cultures.

What are the benefits of probiotics?

Probiotics are 'friendly' bacteria that play a key role in intestinal health, helping to keep the balance between helpful bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, that produce lactic and acetic acids, and less beneficial bacteria that produce gases and may contribute to symptoms such as flatulence, bloating, and diarrhoea.

We're also beginning to learn just how important our gut health is to our overall wellbeing. As well as helping to break down food and release energy, bacteria in the gut also support nutrient production, maintain healthy cholesterol levels and help to maintain hormonal balance. Find out more in this guide – including diet and lifestyle advice for maintaining a healthy balance of bacteria in your gut.

Types of probiotics supplements

The Healthspan range offers a number of probiotic supplements, providing beneficial bacteria in tough, long-life capsules to ensure that the maximum number are able to reach the gut. Here's what you need to know about the best probiotic supplements.

Superpro probiotics

Healthspan's SuperPro products offer varying numbers of live bacteria, to help support your individual needs.

For general health, Healthspan's experts recommend taking a probiotic that provides between 5 billion and 20 billion probiotic bacteria per day. If you're taking antibiotics, a supplement that provides 20 billion to 50 billion probiotic bacteria is advisable.

Super20 Pro

One of Healthspan's best-selling probiotic supplements, Super20 Pro provides 20 billion live, friendly bacteria from five of the best strains – including Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus paracasei, plus Bifidobacterium lactis and Bifidobacterium bifidum.

Available as 30 or 60 vegan capsules, Super20 Pro is a convenient and cost-effective way to try probiotics and help promote healthy bacteria in your gut.

Super50 Pro

Healthspan's strongest probiotic culture contains 50 billion live, friendly bacteria plus added calcium and vitamins B6 and D3. Super50 Pro offers unprececented support for the digestive system, immune health and energy levels.*

The high-performing bacterial strains – including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium lactis – are stomach acid and bile resistant, to help them reach your digestive system. The vegetarian, lactose-free formulation is available in a larger, economical 60-capsule pack.

*Calcium contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes. Vitamins B6  and D3 contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and to the normal function of the immune system.

Super10 Pro

Super10 Pro contains a smaller amount of 10 billion live bacteria from three different strains, including Lactobacillus acidophilus. Super10 Pro is perfect for those looking for a little boost to their digestive health, or who may be trying probiotics for the first time.

The probiotic's vegetarian capsules also have added vitamin D3 to help support the immune system and overall wellbeing.

Multivitamin probiotics

Some of our products combine essential vitamins and minerals with the most beneficial live bacteria in one handy tablet, to support multiple aspects of your health.

MultiVitality Pro

To provide a comprehensive boost to health, MultiVitality Pro contains an advanced blend of vitamins and minerals, plus two well-researched strains of live 'friendly' bacteria – Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum – essential for the health of your intestinal microflora.

As a result, you only have to take one capsule a day to support immunity, energy, heart, eye, brain and bone health.

MultiVitality Pro is available in two different pack sizes, with one perfect for trial (30 tablets, £4.45) or optimal value (90 tablets, £13.95).

Elite probiotics

Developed in consultation with Healthspan's expert panel of nutritionists and scientists, all our Elite products are batch-tested and approved by Informed Sport to be safer for competing athletes, with optimal doses for those competing at the highest level.

Elite Pro50 Biotic

This maximum-strength probiotic contains 50 billion live bacteria per capsule, taken from five strains specifically chosen for competing athletes.

Thanks to an advanced freeze-dry process (which means that bacteria are held in a suspended state before being 're-activated' when the capsule is swallowed), the bacteria are able to reach your gut safely. The product is also suitable for vegans.

The strains used in Elite Pro50 Biotic are the highly researched Bifidobacterium lactis BI-04®, Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37®, Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM®, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Lactobacillus fermentum SBS-1™.

Elite All Blacks 3-in-1 Health Essentials

Developed, as the name suggests, with players and nutritionists from New Zealand's All Blacks rugby team, this 3-in-1 supplement is trsuted by professional athletes – and what works for them can work for you too.

Providing three daily supplements – a multivitamin, omega 3 fish oils and probiotic capsule with 20 billion live cultures – the Elite All Blacks 3-in-1 Health Essentials supplement provides everything athletes need for everyday wellbeing and performance.

The five strains of live probiotic cultures have all been carefully selected and are found naturally in the human body, to ensure they are gentle on your system. In addition, the capsules are gastro- and bile- resistant, to ensure the bacteria reach your digestive system successfully.

Packs last for one month, providing a good-value option for supporting your nutritional needs.

Best probiotic UK

As with all supplements, choosing the best probiotic supplement for you is a personal choice and will depend on your current lifestyle and health goals.

However, ensuring that your supplement contains at least three strains of bacteria – including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria, two of the most beneficial – is a good place to start.
