Why can't I sleep?

Sleep is important for physical and mental health and wellbeing: it's important for all biological functions, from maintaining weight and energy levels to regulating mood and improving memory. Just one bad night's sleep can lead to loss of concentration and mood changes, and long-term sleep problems have been linked to serious health issues such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Adults should aim to get more than seven hours of sleep each night, but according to The Sleep Charity 40% of adults and children suffer from sleep issues, which include insomnia, sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome and sleepwalking. Other causes of sleep issues include stress, bladder control problems, hormonal changes during menopause and even lifestyle factors like too much caffeine or screen usage.

What can help me get to sleep?

For those who struggle to fall and stay asleep, certain things can help. Sleep hygiene is important – for example, keeping a regular sleep-wake schedule, getting early-morning light, avoiding caffeinated drinks and alcohol before bed, and reducing screentime in the evening. These can all help to regulate the body's circadian rhythm, which is controlled by the 'sleep hormone' melatonin.

Other hormones also play a part: fluctuations of oestrogen and progesterone during menopause can cause insomnia, while too much cortisol (the stress hormone) can also make sleep elusive. Sleep aid tablets
