CBD has become a popular wellness supplement in the United States and recently the UK has caught on. But one question that keeps on popping up when it comes to CBD oil’s safety is, ‘why is CBD oil legal’?

There’s often confusion around the terms ‘cannabis oil’ and ‘CBD oil’. CBD is in fact, the legal supplement that you’ve probably been reading about recently. There are questions around legality of CBD, it’s an oil that comes from a cannabis plant which can be broken down into a substance that has psychoactive effects or - as is more widely known - that stimulates the reaction of feeling ‘high’.

What is CBD oil?

The ‘hemp’ plant and the ‘marijuana’ plant are both types of cannabis. What makes them completely different is their ingredients – specifically ‘CBD’ and trace amounts of ‘THC’. The ingredient ‘CBD’ (otherwise known as cannabidiol) is a natural extract of the hemp plant that’s non-intoxicating and void of any psychoactive inducing properties. It’s also the ingredient that’s been widely researched in the States for its health benefits. The ingredient ‘THC’, that is plenteous in the marijuana plant, is responsible for the so called ‘high’ that’s associated with cannabis. But because there are trace or very low levels of ‘THC’ in CBD oil it doesn’t have any psychoactive effects.

When does cannabis become ‘illegal’?

You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘recreational marijuana use’ and ‘medicinal marijuana use’. These terms have been the source of many battles between whether marijuana should be made legal or not in certain states in the US. 21 states have in fact legalised this drug but technically America, as a whole, brandishes it an ‘illegal substance’.

As discussed – marijuana does have psychoactive effects because of the level of THC it contains. But CBD oil is an ingredient void of its connotations and only has trace levels of THC in it. CBD is completely legal in the UK and is known for its therapeutic effects, not its psychoactive effects. Cannabis doesn’t ‘become legal’, rather certain ingredients within it (such as CBD) were never illegal in the first place. CBD oil originates from the hemp plant which is a different type of cannabis plant, but from the same family. And hemp plants are bred specifically for their CBD contents and without enough THC to cause the ‘high’ that people incorrectly associate with all types of cannabis.

CBD oil safety

CBD is extremely well tolerated. The reported side effects include dry mouth, low blood pressure, light headedness and drowsiness but these consequences are reported rarely. A new report from the World Health Organisation (WHO) on CBD actually suggests cannabis oil to be mostly well-tolerated, with a good safety profile.

Healthspan is a member of the Cannabis Trades Association UK (CTA UK), a body created to ensure legal and ethical CBD trading standards in the UK. CTA UK works closely with the MHRA, FSA and CTPA to comply with EU and UK legislation and regulations. Only selected companies that meet exceptionally high quality standards are allowed to carry its seal of approval; its members guarantee transparency in trading, registration, batch testing and labelling, with reliable and accurate product information to give consumers peace of mind.

CBD oil dosage

Multiple small studies of CBD safety in humans suggest it’s well tolerated across a wide dosage range. No significant central nervous system side effects, or effects on vital signs or mood were seen at doses of 200mg to 300 mg/day by mouth (some suggest 600mg to 1,500mg per day may be tolerable). However, the Cannabis Trades Association UK suggests that CBD products with a daily adult dosage of up to 200mg should continue to be marketed as a food supplement.
