Learn about how cleansing and toning forms the foundation of your skincare routine.

Busy mornings, a long day or other distractions can sometimes mean we neglect the important cleansing step as a way of shortening the daily routine. You might be more regimented with moisturising or putting on your eye cream but without this essential step you may find it hard to get the dewy, beautiful skin you’ve been pining for.

Why skin needs cleansing

To allow skin to benefit from any creams or treatments you use, you must first start with a clean base. By clearing away the dirt and debris barrier, skin cells are more prepared to absorb what you put on afterwards so your skin doesn’t miss out on the benefits!

During the day, your skin is exposed to a number of things including bacteria and pollutants. Daily regeneration of skin means you’ll also have dead skin cells lying on the surface alongside a build-up of natural oils. Cleansing helps to remove these impurities and restore a brighter, more radiant appearance.

Overnight your skin uses oxygen to repair itself but if make-up and the build-up from the day is not removed, it can prevent this from happening. Increased blood flow whilst you rest is the perfect time to get the best from your skincare products but without a clean base they cannot be absorbed easily. Temperature also rises during the night resulting in perspiration so regardless of whether you have cleansed before bed it is also important to cleanse in the morning to avoid congested pores. Due to collagen levels falling as we age pores do no close as easily meaning that they can become clogged resulting in inflammation.
