Modern life is more fast-paced and technology-focused than ever before but is it accelerating the ageing process? We explore how to future-proof your skin from the pitfalls of modern life…

According to research, the average UK adult spends 8 hours 41 minutes a day on media devices including smartphones and tablets. Squinting at screens all day can have an adverse effect on the delicate skin around our eyes. Try taking regular breaks from electronic devices every 30 minutes and position them correctly - your eyes should be looking straight or up, not down.

Phones can harbour all sorts of bacteria which can have a negative effect on your skin. At the end of day wipe away the day’s impurities to leave your skin clean and refreshed.

As we spend more time on electronic devices, our Y-zone is at risk of accelerated ageing. Looking after your neck and décolletage area is becoming increasingly important as we continue to hunch over our devices. In a neutral position, the average head weighs 12lbs but when bent over it can weigh up to 40lbs which puts pressure on the neck, causing skin to sag and wrinkles to develop. Try holding your device at eye level and apply a targeted cream.

Whilst social media can be great for connecting with others, sometimes it’s important to take time out and treat yourself to some ‘me’ time. Why not trade 10 minutes on social media for a face mask one to three times a week? Your skin will reap the rewards.

Nothing beats a healthy, balanced diet to provide all the nutrients we need. But when this isn't possible, supplements can help. This article isn't intended to replace medical advice. Please consult your healthcare professional before trying supplements or herbal medicines.
