Known otherwise as cannabidiol, CBD is a non-psychoactive purified nutrient harvested from the hemp plant. CBD oil cannot cause the ‘high’ associated with cannabis, but it could help you improve low mood and poor sleep.

A good mood and a bad mood and a good night’s sleep and a bad night’s sleep can be the difference between a fulfilled day and a day filled with fatigue and melancholy. The wonder of CBD oil has been dominating the world of health. Here’s why you might want to consider it as your next wellbeing investment.

CBD oil for sleep:

The Great British Bedtime Report 2017 showed we’re getting even less sleep than we were in 2013 (1). Almost three-quarters (74%) of Brits sleep less than seven hours per night while the number of people who said they get less than seven hours a night has grown from 7% to 12%. A further 61% of Brits said between five and seven hours of sleep per night is their norm.

What we’re failing to realise is that sleep is not an option but an integral part of health and wellbeing. Too little sleep affects your energy levels, your ability to thrive at work, your motivation when it comes to exercising and eating healthily and even your relationships. Almost a third of Brits get a poor night’s sleep the majority of the time, with the top three reasons being stress or worry, partner disturbance and noise.

There are plenty of options for improving your sleep and CBD oil could be one of them. Unless it’s your bed that’s causing the problems, that is. More than one in 10 (13%) of Britons blame their mattress for their lack of shut eye.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a popular treatment for insomnia and promotes refreshing REM sleep to reduce excessive daytime sleepiness. REM sleep means ‘Rapid Eye Movement’ and is essentially the term for when we enter into a deep phase of sleep - when you dream you experience REM sleep.

CBD oil for mood:

Interestingly, more than half of women (51%) are kept up at night due to worry and stress compared to 39% of men. Low mood is an increasingly common problem caused by any number of issues such as stress at work, lack of sleep, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), depression and anxiety. Regular exercise and a healthy diet have been known to drastically improve low mood and should always be your first point of call, but there are alternatives that could contribute to improving mood, too.

Cannabidiol helps to reduce muscle tension, restlessness and fatigue which can contribute to inactivity which often causes low mood. And in a study involving people with social anxiety, taking CBD supplements before a public speaking engagement reduced anxiety, muddled thoughts, social discomfort and anticipatory anxiety significantly more than placebo (2). CBD may also help with the anxiety that can occur when stopping smoking.
