Seitan is a high-protein food for vegetarians and vegans, which is often used in Asian cooking as a substitute for meat. Check out this delicious recipe for you to try at home.


For the sauce:

  • 2 tbsp sriracha
  • 50ml soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar

For the stir fry:

  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 onion, peeled and sliced into thin wedges
  • 1/2 red pepper, chopped into chunks
  • 1/2 green pepper, chopped into chunks
  • 1 jar of seitan, marinated in ginger and soy sauce, drained
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and finely sliced
  • 2 red chillies, sliced on the diagonal
  • 3 spring onions, sliced on the diagonal

To serve:
Black sesame seeds, wedges of lime and a handful of coriander leaves.


  1. Place all of the sauce ingredients into a large bowl and mix together.
  2. When ready to cook, heat the sesame oil on a high heat in a wok.
  3. Add the onion and peppers and cook for 2 minutes, then add the marinade and the seitan and heat through. Add in the garlic and red chillies and cook for a minute, then stir through the spring onions. Add a splash of water to the sauce if needed.
  4. Spoon rice into a small bowl, pushing it down with the back of a spoon, then place a serving plate on top and turn the whole thing over and remove the bowl
  5. Spoon the seitan around the rice and then sprinkle with the sesame seeds.
  6. Serve with wedges of lime and coriander.
