What is retinol?
“Retinol is basically just another name for vitamin A” Julie explains, “and is one of the most effective skincare ingredients available without prescription to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”
There are many different forms of retinol, but pure retinol (as opposed to pro-retinol) is more effective because its structure allows it to work on the skin immediately. “It is a very robust antioxidant and can interrupt the free-radical damage process that causes skin to look older. It has been proven that by using retinol, you can increase skin’s collagen production and help prevent against wrinkling.”
What benefits does it have for skin?
Retinol helps combat a number of skin concerns, from eczema and acne to the signs of ageing. As Julie explains, “retinol works by increasing cell turnover within the skin, stimulating collagen production, and exfoliating the top layers of skin to reveal fresher, younger-looking skin underneath.” One of the main advantages of a higher cell turnover is to improve hyperpigmentation, resulting in a more even skin tone.
How do I use it?
Retinol may be the closest thing to magic, but that doesn’t mean you should forsake the rest of your skincare regime: in fact by looking after your skin you get the best results. As always, use a good cleanser and toner, and remember to use SPF protection (now handily included in lots of day creams) to help prevent further skin damage and ageing. Depending on your skin type, you may need to introduce retinol products gradually, as it is a highly effective ingredient and may not be suitable for sensitive skin.
