In our recent survey we asked you about your top skin concerns and were surprised to find that that uneven skin tone was low on the list. Here we explain why taking care of skin tone, both in terms of complexion and elasticity can make all the difference.

Uneven complexion

Scientists Karl Grammer and Bernhard Fink* have found that uneven skin tone or uneven colour distribution can add as much as 20 years to a woman’s appearance. The scientists took photographs of 169 women and using 3D imaging software they removed all other signs of ageing such as wrinkles. 400 people were then asked to look at the images, guess the age and how healthy and attractive they looked.

Those with the most even skin tone were judged to be younger and also received significantly higher ratings for attractiveness and health. So if skin health, youthfulness or attractiveness are on your skincare wish list then skin tone should be too.

Irregularities in skin colouring can be caused by several factors including UV damage, natural ageing and sometimes skin conditions such as rosacea. Unsurprisingly, the researchers found UV damage to be the key reason for perceived ageing. Even if the damage is already done there are easy solutions for tackling uneven skin colouring and boosting a more youthful appearance.

Loss of skin elasticity

If you pull your skin and it quickly pops back quickly into place, then you’re lucky that it’s very elastic. However, if you pull your skin and it very slowly sinks back then it’s not as elastic. Skin naturally becomes more inelastic and therefore more untoned as we age. This is due to levels of the proteins, collagen and elastin decreasing in the skin. Unfortunately with age, there are certain factors which cause collagen’s ability to function properly to diminish. These are just a few of the reasons:

• GENETICS: Apart from UV exposure this is probably the biggest factor determining how and when your skin will lose elasticity and tone.

• HORMONES: Due to falling oestrogen levels, the body has less ability to develop collagen.

• SLEEP: Much of the restoration and regeneration of your skin happens whilst you sleep, if you don’t get enough sleep then you aren’t giving your body the time to do this.
