    Description

    What is biotin?

An essential vitamin that forms part of the vitamin B family, the word biotin is derived from the Greek word ‘biotos’, meaning ‘life’ or ‘sustenance’. Which is fitting as biotin has long been associated with beauty and the vital role it plays in the growth and repair of your hair and skin. Biotin is also important in the way our body breaks down food, supporting macronutrient and energy−yielding metabolism. Finally, it also supports normal psychological function and the nervous system.

    Why is ours better?

This high strength vegan formulation contains 1000 µg biotin to promote healthy hair and skin from within. These convenient, one−a−day tablets are easy−to−swallow and make a simple but highly effective addition to your beauty routine.

*Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and skin.

    What is biotin used for?

Biotin (vitamin B7) is a B complex vitamin most often associated with skin, hair, and nails.

As biotin is a water-soluble vitamin that is not stored in the body, we need to ensure we maintain an adequate daily intake to keep our levels topped up.

Food sources include meat, oily fish, and egg yolks, as well as wholegrains, nuts, lentils, spinach, cauliflower, and mushrooms – but higher doses are most easily obtained through biotin tablets.

As well as supporting healthy-looking hair and nails, biotin also contributes to energy-yielding metabolism, the normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function, as well as the maintenance of normal skin. 1,000µg can be taken daily.

    Biotin tablets

Healthspan Biotin is available in packs of 180 easy-to-swallow tablets, individually blister-packed for optimum freshness and quality. Each tablet can be popped through the foil as and when required, providing 1,000mg high-strength biotin to safeguard your nutritional needs every day.

The superior formulation is also gelatin-free, making it suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Healthspan Biotin is also available on Subscribe & Save, with savings on every pack.

As an important member of the B vitamin family, biotin also features in Healthspan's High Strength Vitamin B Complex and numerous multivitamins and multivitamin gummies, including Women's MultiVit Super Fruit Gummies.

Testament to its popularity and effectiveness, biotin is also a key ingredient in Healthspan's beauty range, including the Replenish Hair & Nail 50 Plus and Hair & Nail Strengthener Nutritional Supplement.

    Biotin for hair

Biotin vitamins are a simple but effective addition to many people's beauty routine, supporting skin and hair from within. As well as a single biotin vitamin, the Healthspan range also has biotin in three hair and beauty supplements: the Hair & Nail Strengthener Supplement, Replenish Hair & Nail 50 Plus and Collagen Glow™.

In the Hair & Nail Strengthener Supplement, 300ug biotin is used alongside 17 other carefully-chosen micronutrients (including OptiMSM, silica, and zinc) to help promote glossy, shiny hair and strong, healthy-looking nails.

The Replenish Hair & Nail 50 Plus, meanwhile, is specifically formulated for use during and after the menopause, when nails and hair can become thin and weak. The specialised formula contains biotin for hair, alongside soy isoflavones, vitamin C, copper, zinc and selenium.

The newest addition to the range, Collagen Glow™, provides 12.5ug biotin per daily dose, alongside 5,000mg marine collagen to support healthy skin, hair, and nails.

How much biotin do I need?

The recommended daily intake for biotin is 50ug – although higher does of biotin tablets can be taken to help support our health.

Although deficiency is rare, it can occur in those taking long-term antibiotics, in those who eat large amounts of raw egg white and in people with an inherited error in biotin metabolism (around one in every 120 people.)

According to the National Institutes of Health, pregnant and breastfeeding women are more likely to have problems getting enough biotin.

Those with symptoms of biotin deficiency (which include dry, flaky skin, brittle hair and nails, tiredness, loss of appetite, patchy hair loss, depression, and muscle pains) a high-strength biotin supplement can help to support a nutritional shortfall.

To prevent biotin deficiency, a well-formulated multivitamin can be sufficient. Find out more about Healthspan's multivitamins.

Does biotin have any side effects?

Like the other B-vitamins, biotin is water-soluble, which means that it is not stored in the body. As a result, biotin is relatively non-toxic, as excess will be excreted in urine.

Temporary side effects of ingesting too much biotin could include an upset stomach or nausea, although it remains a vitamin with very low side effects.

Daily intakes of up to 1,000ug appear to be safe, with no serious side effects reported.
