    Description

    What is Vitamin K2?

The history of vitamin K2 goes back centuries, more precisely to feudal Japan where Samurai warriors consumed vast quantities of natto − a dish made of fermented soybean. This dish, still consumed today, is the highest food source of vitamin K2. Fermented foods − such as sauerkraut and miso, and animal products including meat, butter, egg yolks, cheese and yogurt also contain vitamin K2. However, while historical diets probably provided enough vitamin K2, food preparation and storage in the modern world mean we are not getting nearly as much from our diets. In fact, most western diets are deficient. K2 is a fat−soluble vitamin essential for bone density. This vitamin regulates the transport and distribution of calcium in the body, playing a vital role in bone health. It is also needed for blood clotting, which helps the healing of wounds.

    Why is ours better?

We make our capsules only from vitamin K2 in its MK−7 form. This is the purest, most active and safe form of vitamin K2 to support normal bones and blood clotting. Even better, compared to other forms of vitamin K, MK−7 reaches bones and vessel walls more easily whilst also remaining biologically active in our bodies for longer.

    Who is this for?

For anyone looking to promote healthy blood coagulation and bones.

    What is vitamin K?

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin, with important roles in the body: namely contributing to normal blood clotting (which helps to heal wounds) and the maintenance of normal bones.

As a result, vitamin K is a popular supplement with people as they get older – and particularly for women during and after menopause, when bone density can decline significantly.

It's important to know that there are two types of vitamin K: K1 and K2. Although the vitamins are similar, they have important differences in absorption and the way the body uses them, which mean it is important to look for the K2 form as a supplement.

Read more about vitamin K2's benefits in this guide to vitamins and minerals for bone health.

Signs of deficiency of vitamin K

Overall, vitamin K deficiency is quite rare, but symptoms that can reveal major deficiency include easy bruising, diarrhoea, prolonged bleeding, recurrent nose bleeds, and heavy periods.

A single dose of vitamin K is also offered to all newborn babies to prevent haemorrhagic disease of the newborn: a condition that can occur during the first few days of life and cause haemorrhage in the brain due to vitamin K deficiency.

How to increase vitamin K levels?

Several foods contain vitamin K, mostly in the form of vitamin K1 (for example, cauliflower, broccoli and kale.) Unfortunately, this form is less easily absorbed than vitamin K2, and is generally less useful, including for bone health.

Vitamin K2 is found in foods like liver, cheese, egg yolk, meats and fermented foods like probiotic yoghurt, cheese and natto – but it should be noted that these small quantities are further depleted by modern food preparation and storage methods – meaning we're not getting as much vitamin K from our diet as we once were.

Some vitamin K2 can be made from vitamin K1 in the body, but when vitamin K intakes are low, the liver holds on to its reserves – which means little is available elsewhere. Some vitamin K2 is also made by probiotic bacteria in the bowel, although not enough to meet our needs (particularly in older people.)

As a result, vitamin K tablets, ideally those using the K2 form, can be useful for those who think they are not getting enough.

Find out more about where to find vitamin K, as well as its health benefits, in this guide to the most important vitamins and minerals for bone health.

    Vitamin K tablets

For the greatest benefit, vitamin K tablets should provide the K2 vitamin form (for heart and circulatory benefits) and are best taken with meals for optimum absorption.

Healthspan's Vitamin K2 supplement is vegan- and vegetarian-friendly, and provides vitamin K2 in its MK-7 form, which reaches bones and blood vessel walls more easily. Vitamin K2 also has the advantage of staying in the body longer than vitamin K1.

Overall, the supplement provides an effective way to support vitamin K levels in the body, and is particularly helpful for anyone looking to promote healthy blood coagulation and bone health.
