What are multivitamins, and why do we need them?

You'll be well aware that in order to function properly, our bodies need the right intake of vitamins and minerals. In an ideal world, we'd get everything we need from our diet, but it isn't always possible to eat perfectly every day. What's more, some things are out of our control; for example, sunlight is essential to maintain vitamin D levels, but this can be hard to come by in the UK in winter.

Multivitamins contain a selection of essential vitamins and minerals, in a single convenient dose. They aren't a one-size-fits-all solution, but they can act as a solid foundation and give you the peace of mind that important gaps in your diet have been filled.

Why take multivitamins?

It's been several years since government guidelines were introduced recommending we eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, but research has shown that only 27% of adults hit this target. What's more, the vegetables we eat may not be as nutritious as they once were; a report by nutritionist Dr David Thomas found that levels of iron, copper and calcium in vegetables were as much as 76% lower than in 1940.

Multivitamins help ensure you’re getting the nutrition you need, whether you know your diet isn't as balanced as it should be, are on a diet, or have certain dietary preferences due to personal beliefs or intolerances.

According to research, a mere twenty-seven percent of adults, 35% of older adults and 8% of 11-18-year olds meet the '5-A-Day' recommendation for consumption of fruit and veg per day, despite the newly implemented recommendation of '10-a-day'.
