Omega 3

What are omega 3 fatty acids, and why do we need them?

Omega 3 fatty acids are found in oily fish, such as sardines, tuna and salmon. The health benefits of such fatty acids are well known. They're important for maintaining a normal metabolism, and for brain, heart and eye health. The simplest omega 3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), is also classed as an essential fatty acid, meaning it can’t be synthesised in the body and must come from the diet. Your body can use ALA to make more complex omega 3 variants such as EPA and DHA, but the process is inefficient and means that such fatty acids can be in short supply.

What do omega 3 fatty acids do?

Omega 3 fatty acids act as the foundation of healthy cell walls, help to thin the blood and are converted by the body into anti-inflammatory substances. These properties can bring a number of benefits, from helping reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, to helping protect against dementia and reducing the joint pain and swelling associated with arthritis. It’s also important to take omega 3 during pregnancy to ensure proper development of the baby’s eyes and brain.

Omega 3s have an anti-inflammatory action that is beneficial for joints and may help to protect against long-term inflammatory diseases such as asthma and psoriasis. Omega 3s may also reduce the low-grade inflammation of artery walls that is associated with heart attack and stroke.
