Probiotics

What are probiotics, and why do we need them?

Probiotics can also be called ‘good’ or ‘friendly’ bacteria. Our bodies, particularly our guts, are made up of trillions of microbes and bacteria, which vastly outnumber the human cells. Certain types of bacteria help everyday bodily functions, so it’s important to encourage the growth and diversity of 'good' bacteria throughout the body.

Such bacteria line your gut and help to digest food – extracting the vitamins, minerals and nutrients we need to stay healthy. They also crowd out the ‘bad’ bacteria that can lead to digestive upsets. Luckily, it’s possible to restore the balance of good and bad in your gut by taking in good bacteria from natural sources such as live yoghurts and cheese, or from capsules or pills.

What are prebiotics?

There are also prebiotics, which act as fertilisers or catalysts for probiotics; prebiotics are found naturally in foods such as asparagus and onions, and can be taken as supplements.

There are many perceived benefits when it comes to probiotics and prebiotics. Though there’s an increasing amount of research into the benefits of probiotics, it’s worth noting that there’s no conclusive evidence to substantiate the health claims surrounding friendly bacteria. Through our guides and advice from our experts we’ll give you the help you need to do your own research.

A healthy immune system begins in the gut so taking a supplement can act as a helping hand and a booster to the bacteria already found in your gut.
