Vitamin D

What is vitamin D, and why do we need it?

If you're thinking of taking a supplement, vitamin D should definitely be on your list. It's produced in the skin and is vital for healthy bones, teeth, and muscles, and is increasingly believed to play a role in immune function. Vitamin D is also known as the sunshine vitamin, as although it's found in food in small amounts, 90 per cent is made by the body on exposure to UVB sunlight.

The variant synthesised by the body is D3, or colecalciferol, while vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is found naturally in some foods.

Can you get enough vitamin D from the sun?

The big problem in the UK is that we can only make vitamin D when the sun's UV index is greater than three, and our sunlight just isn't that strong in autumn and winter. The 2016 National Diet and Nutrition Survey found that one in five people aged 19 to 64, one in six aged 65 and over, and a quarter of children aged 11 to 18 had low vitamin D levels throughout the year.

Public Health England recommends that everyone takes a vitamin D supplement from October to March, and also through the spring and summer if you are spending a lot of time indoors.

Public Health England's recommended level is 10 mcg per day, but as your ability to make vitamin D in your skin declines with age, Healthspan's Medical Director Dr. Brewer recommends a 25 mcg supplement for adults up to 50 years, and 50 mcg per day thereafter. For more information see our vitamin D nutrient guide.

Public Health England recommends that everyone over the age of one year should take a daily supplement providing 10 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin D during autumn and winter. This is very much a minimum to prevent deficiency diseases.

Vitamin D supplements

Our vitamin D supplements come in a range of formats to suit everyone's needs, including pills, sprays and gummies. We've left out vitamin D2 from our products, because vitamin D3 supplements are more effective when it comes to maintaining the level of vitamin D in your blood. Research shows that optimum intake levels of vitamin D may be far higher than originally thought, so we’ve made sure our tablets contain higher levels of this nutrient.
