Beechboys race around Ireland

A father and son duo known as the Beechboys embarked on an epic cycle around Ireland...

Father and son duo Norman and James Beech aka the Beechboys.

The event

The Race around Ireland. A grueling 1350-mile race around the rugged Irish terrain that must be completed within 132 hours. This means they cycled 275 miles a day, nearly twice the distance of the longest stage of the 2014 Tour de France! If that wasn’t enough of a challenge, the boys took it one step further than most by cycling on a tandem. A race first.

Why are they doing it?

The boys cycled to support four different charities and raised £2,000 for each: Tearfund, Circles of Influence, Snowdrop Project and Links International. Each charity works to help those in serious need and Norman and James know people who work for each of these charities, so they have first-hand knowledge of the difference their work brings to people’s lives.

What training was involved?

Preparation was extensive with 12 months of training, including a lot of cycling, sleep management, nutrition management and mental preparation.

How did Healthspan help?

Healthspan customers since 2009, the Beechboys applied to the Healthspan Heroes scheme in March 2014. The funding they received went towards some of their kit costs as well as fueling their support vehicles, which carried spare tyres, food and provided a place to sleep.
