Your horse’s weight bearing joints get very little relief. The synovial joints in particular, which are the most active, will experience a wearing down of the cartilage and can therefore be a significant cause of pain and discomfort for your horse.

Although the onset of joint issues can be related to your horse’s lifestyle, it is important to include a joint supplement within most horses’ dietary plans because even recreational horses will experience joint discomfort and degeneration over time. Studies have shown a definite change in horses around the age of 15, a point at which elasticity has already started to reduce and cartilage to thin, resulting in joints that are less mobile and less able to absorb the shock of impact during movement.

The contributory factors of joint problems are varied and often intertwined – diet, genetics, general wear and tear, poor foot balance and lifestyle can all play their part – and as a result it’s important to start supplementing joints as soon as possible. Effective joint supplements contain key ingredients like glucosamine, chondroitin and sulphur, which help provide your horse’s joints with the essential building blocks for rebuilding cartilage. Feeding your horse a joint supplement will help to ensure their joints are protected throughout their younger years and help them to continue to enjoy an active and happy life during their retirement.

Look out for...

Keep an eye on your horse and see if they exhibit any of the tell-tale signs of joint discomfort:

  • Swelling or puffiness in their joints
  • Stiffness after sleep or periods of standing
  • Reluctance to move or difficulty performing normal activities
