Born on Guernsey I have ridden since a young age but whilst living on the Island I only had the opportunity to show jump. I competed regularly and represented the Island on the BSJA Guernsey Show Jumping junior team for 3 years, the last year of which I was the Captain.
On a trip to the UK with my pony to participate in Pony Club training I discovered eventing and the seeds were sown. So in September 2011, at the age of 16, I moved to the UK and I attended school in Bath to complete my A levels. I kept my newly acquired mare, Nana Cael, in a yard nearby, and I started to learn the new skills that I needed to make the transition from Showjumping to Eventing. My biggest challenge was the first stage in the 3 discipline sport – the dressage. I completed 2012 at pre novice and in 2013 moved up to Novice level after acquiring another horse – Majestic Mind. Both horses had a win at this level in 2013 and competed at a few CIC* events.
At the beginning of the 2014 season I competed in two CIC* competitions and four U21 open Intermediates and I had high hopes for the season. But at Barbury Castle Event, my mare sustained a fracture to a bone in her foot and whilst on rest for this we discovered she had a cancerous ovary, so with rest and an operation the mare was out of action midseason and the decision was made that she would be used to start our breeding programme this spring.
The horses moved to Nick Gauntlett’s yard in July 2014 when I was offered a working pupil placement and I took the opportunity to acquire a young horse, Kilkern Lux as my second horse.
I competed in France at the end of last season with both horses to gain experience at international arenas and big occasion surroundings. Travelling with Nick Gauntlett and Francis Whittington to the French event proved to be hard work but very rewarding and being around two top professional riders provides me with immeasurable knowledge. My performance on Majestic Mind was promising and it will be this little grey horse that I will campaign for Young Riders in 2015/2016.
I plan to accept a placement to study Mathematics at Bristol University later this year by which time I hope to have some solid results on my record for the 2015 season. I also plan to move my horses to my own yard just outside Bath this year.
