Vitamin D3 4,000 IU is the optimum level recommended by nutritionists to quickly correct deficiency. If you spend time training indoors or have limited exposure to natural sunlight you may be vitamin D deficient. Formulated using vitamin D3, the form of vitamin D most readily absorbed by the body, each small ‘easy-swallow’ capsule provides 4,000 IU of vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 plays a number of important roles in the body including providing support for immune health, muscle health and bone health.

Vitamin D can be obtained through food sources such as eggs, fortified cereals and oily fish, but is predominantly synthesised in the skin through exposure to sunlight.

Vitamin D deficiency is common across populations throughout the UK and as a result of a low level of exposure to sunlight, vitamin D synthesis becomes almost impossible in the winter.

Deficiency has also been observed amongst athletes including those who mainly train outdoors. This has a detrimental impact on bone health and may have wider health consequences which negatively affect athletic performance.

Vitamin D3 supplementation can play an important role in correcting vitamin D deficiency to ensure the maintenance of adequate to optimal levels.

Product Origins

The vitamin D in all our formulations is the naturally occurring D3 form (also known as cholecalciferol). Cholecalciferol is produced by processing 7-dehydrocholesterol which is extracted from the lanolin found in sheep's wool.

Lanolin is a waxy substance which helps protects the skin of sheep against rain and other environmental factors. It is extracted from wool grease and wool wax alcohols obtained from the cleaning of wool after the shearing of sheep. The lanolin is then purified which results in a substance called 7-dehydrocholesterol, the same precursor of vitamin D found in our skin. The 7-dehydrocholesterol is exposed to ultraviolet light, which replicates the chemical reaction occurring in our skin when we soak up sunlight. The final product is then stabilised on a powdered carrier to enable the manufacture of tablets.

The result of this extraction and purification process is a highly concentrated form of vitamin D3 which offers 99% purity and unparalleled quality.

I was recently diagnosed as having a severe Vitamin D deficiency and was prescribed high dose Vitamin D tablets by my GP, but before I started to take them I discovered that they contained gelatine. As I am a vegetarian I had to source my own vegetarian friendly Vitamin D tablets and purchased these tablets from Healthspan.

I have only been taking the tablets for 3 weeks and already I have noticed that I am not shedding as much hair as I was (this is a common symptom of a severe Vitamin D deficiency).

Another common symptom of a severe Vitamin D deficiency is low mood. After a couple of weeks I noticed that my mood has picked up - I was suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder.

I would highly recommend these tablets, but as they are such a high strength I would only take them if you have been diagnosed by your GP as having a severe .eficiency of Vitamin D rather than low Vitamin D levels.
