What is Menopause?

Menopause is the precise point in a woman's life when she has stopped ovulating and has not had a period for 12 months. The term is also used more broadly, in reference to what is technically peri-menopause: the time in which, thanks to declining oestrogen levels, a woman experiences symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, and irregular periods, before menopause is officially reached.

The start of menopause can be difficult to pinpoint, as everyone is affected differently. Even when a number of symptoms present themselves, the cause is often missed – even by GPs. Having said that, most women start to experience symptoms in their forties, with the average age of menopause in the UK (the time at which periods have stopped for 12 months) being 51 years.

Although symptoms can be difficult, there are things you can do to help look after yourself, including dietary and lifestyle changes. Many women also find that they experience a new lease of life when they come out the other side.

Noticing the Symptoms of Menopause

Everyone's experience of menopause is different, which means that symptoms can vary from woman to woman, as well as from week to week or month to month.

Some of the most common, however, include irregular periods (which can be lighter or heavier than normal, as well as more or less frequent), unexplained mood changes, hot flushes, night sweats, and loss of libido.

Breast tenderness, fatigue, difficult sleeping, and weight gain (particularly around the middle) are also common complaints. Read more about the symptoms of menopause.

Menopause supplements can be used to support this transition as soon as symptoms appear.

With the fall in oestrogen, many women also notice changes to skin, including a loss of radiance and elasticity, as well as thinning hair. Healthspan's Nurture Replenish products have been specially formulated to support skin and hair during menopause, restoring a healthy and radiant appearance.

Natural Remedies for Menopause

Everyone has a different experience of menopause, so Healthspan has a range of natural menopause supplements to choose from, including Sage 2000mg, Flaxseed Oil 1000mg, Starflower Oil 1000mg, and Evening Primrose Oil 1000mg – well known for supporting women's health and maintaining hormonal balance.

These natural remedies can be particularly important for those who cannot (or choose not to) take HRT (hormone replacement therapy).

Useful advice for healthy living, such as a varied diet, regular exercise, getting enough sleep and taking time out to relax, can also help manage symptoms.

Black Cohosh for Menopause

Black cohosh is one of the best-known supplements for menopause, and has traditionally been used to help relieve symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, restlessness, and mood swings.

Healthspan's Black Cohosh Menopause Relief contains 6.5mg of dried rhizome and root extract (equivalent to 29.95-55.25mg of Black Cohosh) in small, easy-to-swallow tablets.

As a mark of guaranteed quality, it carries the THR (Traditional Herbal Medicine) badge, which means it is regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

Sage for Menopause

Sage for menopause is also a popular choice, and can be taken alone or alongside other vitamins and minerals.

Sage is a natural phytoestrogen (plant oestrogen), which mimics the effect of the body's natural oestrogen. Oestrogen plays a number of important roles in the body, but decreases rapidly during menopause.

Each one-a-day tablet contains 400mg sage extract (the equivalent of 2000mg whole sage leaf) produced using a unique water-extraction process to maximise its natural properties.

Healthspan's Sage is a perfect partner to Black Cohosh Menopause Relief.

MenoSerene®, one of Healthspan's most popular menopause vitamins, also contains sage, partnered with flaxseed and soy isoflavones, plus vitamin B6, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D to support bone health, hormonal activity, and energy.

Flaxseed for Menopause

Flaxseed is a rich source of ALA (an omega 3 essential fatty acid that the body cannot produce itself) and is a popular food supplement with women experiencing menopause symptoms.

Healthspan's Flaxseed Oil is a high-strength formulation, containing 1000mg flaxseed oil, which provides 620mg ALA per capsule. ALA contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels, which is important for a healthy heart, which is another reason why flaxseed is popular from mid-life.1

The maximum dose is four capsules a day, which provides more than the 2,000mg daily dose of ALA stipulated by the Government for the beneficial effect on blood cholesterol.

MenoSerene® also contains flaxseed oil alongside several other vitamins for menopause.

Other supplements for menopause

In short, Healthspan offers a wide range of vitamins for menopause, which means there's something for everyone – no matter your symptoms.

As well as sage and flaxseed for menopause, the effects of milk thistle on the menopause are also worth noting, together with evening primrose oil's lesser-known cousin, starflower oil, which is nature's richest source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and a valuable source of omega 9 fatty acids.

As always, if you need more help deciding which menopause supplement is best for you, please don't hesitate to get in touch with our fully qualified customer advisors.
