What is CBD oil?

CBD – short for cannabidiol – is one of the most popular supplements for general wellbeing.

CBD is one of at least 113 compounds (known as cannabinoids) found in the cannabis plant. CBD shouldn't be confused with THC, the cannabinoid in marijuana that has psychoactive effects and gives consumers a 'high'.

Instead CBD, which usually comes in drops or capsules, comes from the stems and leaves of hemp plants, which have naturally low levels of THC. As a result, CBD has no psychoactive or addictive effects – and, when sold from a reputable company, is perfectly safe.

CBD oil benefits

Extracts derived from cannabis plants have been applied to wounds for thousands of years.

There is still some uncertainty around how it works, but what we do know is that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system – receptors of which are found throughout the body, including in skin cells, skin nerve fibres, hair follicles and sweat glands.

As well as CBD oil drops and capsules, the Healthspan range also includes a night-time formulation (combining CBD with ingredients such as chamomile and lavender) and a CBD Balm. Endocannabinoid receptors in the skin allow topical CBD products to have a localised effect.

Because research into the effects of CBD is still ongoing, there are tight restrictions on what we can say about CBD's benefits – despite some studies and plenty of positive stories from users. We do, however, encourage you to do your own research, as well as try CBD for yourself.

If you're looking for real-world stories about using CBD, a good place to start is the Healthspan Facebook CBD Support forum, where Healthspan's customers can share their experiences and help answer each other's questions.

Types of CBD oil

Not all CBD oils are created equal – and as with anything to do with your health, it's important to know what you're taking. From the purity or composition of a product, to where and how it was sourced, reliable brands will always be upfront with all the information you need.

You may have heard of three main types of CBD: broad-spectrum, full-spectrum and CBD isolate.

Isolate CBD only contains pure CBD, whereas broad- and full-spectrum CBD contain a wide variety of the cannabinoids from the hemp plant. Healthspan's CBD products all contain CBD isolate, which has the advantage of even lower levels of THC than broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD.

As well as capsules and drops, CBD can also be taken as gummies and even teabags. Whatever form you choose, always check the dosage and ingredients carefully. CBD oil drops and capsules have the largest amounts of CBD, and also give you more control over the dosage.

Healthspan's range contains a variety of CBD strengths. Whichever you choose, remember to always start 'low and slow'. This is because some people appear to metabolise CBD more slowly than others, and only need a low dose to notice an effect. The CBD dose at which you finally arrive will vary depending on the strength of the product, how you respond to CBD, and the reason you're taking it.

CBD drops

There are three CBD oil drops products in the Healthspan range, with strengths ranging from 2.75% to 10.7%. All are extracted using non-toxic carbon dioxide and a filter-clear method to ensure a pure and highly concentrated liquid CBD.

Simply drop under the tongue for fast, effective absorption. A touch of peppermint oil in every formulation ensures a pleasant taste.

CBD Oil Drops 1,000mg is our maximum strength CBD Oil, providing a premium 10.7% super-strength formulation and a total of 1,000mg CBD per bottle. This CBD oil is the best option for advanced and experienced CBD users.

CBD Oil Drops 520mg provides a 5.5% high-strength formulation, with a total of 520mg CBD per bottle. This product is a good choice for anyone already familiar with CBD.

CBD Oil Drops 260mg provides 2.75% CBD oil (260mg per bottle). As our lowest-strength CBD drops product, it's a great-value option and perfect for those new to CBD.

Night Time CBD Oil Drops is our bedtime formulation, enriched with chamomile, lavender, hops and lemon balm. The 2.75% formulation provides 260ml of the same pure, highly concentrated CBD.

CBD capsules

Taking CBD as capsules ensures that you can take a specific dose in a controlled way.

All CBD capsules in the Healthspan range exclusively use filter-pure, broad-spectrum CBD, containing high levels of CBD and virtually no THC.

Healthspan's CBD Oil Capsules 192mg contain 6.4mg pure CBD oil, together with vitamin D to support muscle and immune health. Olive oil has been added to help the absorption of CBD in the body.

This product is also available in a larger pack size (60 capsules) under the name CBD Oil Capsules 384mg.

Our strongest capsules – CBD Oil Capsules 450mg – contain 15mg filter-clear, purified cannabidiol per capsule, together with vitamin D3 to support muscle and immune health. These super-strength capsules are designed for those who have tried CBD before.

This product is also available as 60 capsules under the name CBD Oil Capsules 900mg.

Other CBD oil

Another popular way to take CBD is in a balm. Healthspan's CBD Balm is infused with 180mg cannabidiol and essential oils, including arnica, eucalyptus and relaxing lavender, and is perfect for rubbing onto muscles and joints.
