Supplements don’t work like painkillers. Here’s a realistic guide to when you can expect to notice benefits and what affects the speed of results.

🕒 5 min read

Introduction

Unlike most pharmaceutical medications most supplements do not provide immediate effects. Painkillers antibiotics and antacid medications for example work within minutes but with supplements consistency of use and patience is key.

This is because most of them work in a more measured and subtle way by gradually supporting the body’s natural processes and this takes time. It also explains why they are very much less likely to cause any unpleasant and unwanted side effects.

Below is a realistic timeline of when you can expect to feel better when taking certain supplements but bear in mind the following caveats.

What affects how quickly supplements work?

The dose and the formulation.
Sometimes a higher dose and a superior bioavailability of a supplement will achieve quicker results. But recommended dosage should never be exceeded unless on medical advice.

Consistency of use.
Only a regular intake of the right supplements can ensure a steady nutrient level in the body. Conversely irregular use can limit or negate potential benefits.

Age, metabolism and health status.
Speed of action will depend on overall health status and the level of any nutritional deficiency. If you start with a very low level of say iron or vitamin D, it is likely to take longer to see results.

Diet and lifestyle.
Supplements are not an alternative to a healthy lifestyle. This is still important. Smokers, people under excessive stress or who are experiencing too much sun exposure for example are likely to see slower results.

Here is my health improvement timeline for a number of very popular supplements.

Supplement timelines

SupplementFaster effects you might noticeTypical timeline for broader benefits
MagnesiumRelaxation/sleep: 1–7 daysEnergy, mood, blood sugar: ~4–8 weeks
Plant sterolsLDL reduction begins ~1 month (2 g/day)5–15% cholesterol reduction by ~8 weeks
TurmericSome relief in 2–4 weeks6–12 weeks for chronic joint relief
CollagenHair/skin/nails: ~4–8 weeksJoints/bones: 8–12 weeks; Muscle: 3–6 months
GlucosamineOften 4–8 weeks~3 months for joint comfort
Vitamin DBone, immunity, mood/energy: 4–12 weeks

Magnesium

This is one of the quicker acting supplements. People taking it to relax and for better sleep quality often notice improvement within one to 7 days especially if they are already very low in magnesium. For constipation relief magnesium citrate and oxide can help within 6 to 24 hours.

For increased energy, improved mood and blood sugar regulation expect results in 4–8 weeks. This is because magnesium stores are built up fairly slowly. Magnesium glycinate is absorbed better than the oxide salt and is likely to achieve faster results.
