More of us want to live not just longer but better. Longevity research highlights the role of NAD+, a vital coenzyme that fuels cellular energy and supports healthy ageing.

Longevity is trending

In the immortal words of Freddie Mercury: “Who Wants to Live Forever?” Well increasingly it seems most people do. Or at least they want to live to 100 or beyond in good health and with all their faculties. Do you? If so join the club, because it is an increasingly popular ambition and one for which millions are already striving.

The best news is that it is already happening. Longevity clinics are springing up everywhere now and comparing the number of centenarians alive today to those a century ago there has been an incredible 130-times increase in numbers.

Living longer due to better healthcare, nutrition, sanitation and housing is one thing but living longer, healthier and happier is quite another, and one to which we can all aspire.

Did you know? The number of centenarians has increased by over 130 times in the last hundred years, but the focus today is on healthspan rather than lifespan.

Is it realistic?

We may not be able to change our genetic make-up, but we can certainly adjust our lifestyles, our environment and our psychological outlook on life to slow the ageing process and make the most of that with which we were born. Our lifespans have certainly increased dramatically over the last century but, pleasingly, so has our healthspan.

What is NAD+ (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)?

NAD+ is a vital coenzyme found in every living cell. It plays a critical role in cellular energy production, mitochondrial function, DNA repair and resilience to stress.

In simple terms, NAD+ works with enzymes to catalyse thousands of chemical reactions by carrying electrons from one molecule to another, a process called cellular respiration. In other words, NAD+ helps keep cells alive and functioning efficiently.

This process underpins growth and development, immunity, metabolism, vitality, nerve transmission and homeostasis — the body’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in the world around us.

Quick recap: NAD+ is fundamental to life itself, fuelling the tiny powerhouses in our cells (mitochondria) that generate the energy we need to move, think and repair.

Why NAD+ matters as we age

Unfortunately, as the years go by and we are confronted by “diminishing youth” (a far kinder phrase than “getting older”), our ability to produce NAD+ steadily declines, leading to an accelerated ageing process, increasing fatigue and slower recovery. Levels are also diminished by stress, poor diet and environmental factors such as pollution, smoking and excess alcohol. This is where supplementation can help.

How it works

NAD+ (the oxidised form of the coenzyme) fuels the energy-producing powerhouses inside our cells called mitochondria. It helps repair DNA damage, which is an inescapable fact of life, supporting cellular resilience, survival and recovery from injury. Boosting NAD+ levels can therefore promote greater vitality and a more efficient metabolism, as well as supporting the health of the skin and other organs whilst slowing cellular decline and the ageing process generally.

In addition, NAD+, unlike NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) or NR (nicotinamide riboside) — which are precursors of NAD+ — does not need to be converted in the body before it can act. It works directly and is ready to go.

“Every cell in our body requires energy and resilience to combat and repair DNA damage from internal and external challenges. Left unchecked, these factors accelerate the ageing process.”

Who might benefit?

Anyone who wishes to age well and stay energised and alert can benefit. NAD+ is not a miracle cure, but it can be a useful foundation for maintaining vitality and wellbeing as we age.

How can it help with longevity?

More people are now focused on preventing ill health and slowing down the rate of decline. They want many more years in good health, free of serious illness and disability. A healthier lifestyle with regular health checks is vital, but supplements like NAD+ can also act as the icing on the low-calorie cake.

Longevity is not just about existing for longer, it’s about living longer in better health with greater vitality and carefully managed ageing that allows for more years of enjoyment, social engagement and activity.

Unlike Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray or Tolkien’s elves, none of us will ever achieve immortality. But by looking after ourselves and making the right choices, we can look forward to good health into ripe old age.
