Alison and Buddy’s story
Alison Pashley and her much-loved rescue dog, Buddy, lead a slow, contented life, watching the cruise ships from her window overlooking the String, the strong tidal water that separates mainland Orkney, where they live, from Shapinsay.
The former volunteer worker and aerobics instructor, 81, travelled the world for work. But in the last decade she exchanged her globe-trotting lifestyle for the peace of the Scottish archipelago.
“Nothing happens fast here, but me and Buddy love it,” she says.
Meet Buddy
Buddy, now 13, is a much-loved Jack Russell–Dachshund cross. Alison adopted him when he was four years old after he had previously been used as a stud dog.

“He was a former stud dog who had been ill-treated,” she says.
