Tony’s story

At 75, Tony Young, who lives near West Malling in Kent, ‘no longer works for money’. But retirement has not slowed him down. With a background as a chartered secretary, company secretary and accountant, he now uses his skills to help support local charities and community organisations.

Quite a bit of his time is devoted to Spadework, which helps people with learning difficulties and dementia. He is also involved with Pilsdon at Malling Community, a residential community that helps those whose lives have taken difficult turns.

Classic cars are an abiding passion and Tony owns five. They include his pride and joy, a 1938 Rover 10, that he says looks like an Al Capone car, a 1947 Ford Prefect, and a 1980 MGB GT. He is also director and treasurer of the Ford Sidevalve Owners Club.

Supporting his joint health

Despite his busy lifestyle, Tony has had osteoarthritis in his knees for many years. He first noticed it during his daily commute into London in the days of old ‘slam-door’ trains.

“Sometimes I’d get out of one of those old railway carriages, my foot would go down onto the platform and I’d get this shooting pain in my knees, like a needle being stuck into them.”

After some investigation, Tony began to suspect the problem was linked to cartilage wear and tear and, on a friend and colleague’s recommendation, discovered Healthspan.
